Career
Foundation years

turning point
While Samad played junior cricket, he failed to make a noticeable impact. Most of the time he lost his wicket quite early while trying to hit big shots. His strike rate was good; However, he lacked the approach to build his innings. In 2018, when he returned to Jammu after playing in the Under-19 tournament, a camp was organized at the Science College grounds where former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan came to discover and nurture the young cricketing talent of Jammu and Kashmir. The turning point in Samad’s career came when he was spotted by former Irfan Pathan during the cricket trials held at the camp. Irfan, who was then mentoring the Jammu and Kashmir senior team, was amazed to see how easily Samad could hit the ball out of the park. Samad was only a 16-year-old child at that time. Irfan Pathan, intrigued by his powerful batting skills, dug up Samad’s performances in junior-level cricket, only to discover that Samad had yet to score a half-century. Irfan realized that Samad lacked the patience required for a long run. Irfan made Samad realize his potential as Batman. Irfan told Samad to focus on building his innings and hitting the ball selectively rather than trying to get every ball over the boundary rope. Irfan kept him under his wing and not only trained him as a coach but also guided him as a mentor.
Samad’s coaches and Irfan played a crucial role in improving Samad’s game and developing him as a more mature cricketer.

Also, he hit 36 sixes, the highest by any player in the tournament.

The franchisee picked it up for its base price of Rs. 20 lakhs in IPL 2020 auction. Samad played his first IPL match on 29 September 2020 against Delhi Capitals.
