Career
Domestic cricket
He played for New Zealand under-19 team. He was named in the New Zealand squad for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2010. He made his FC debut on 24–27 February 2011 against Central D in Napier. He made his List A debut on 9 January 2011 against Wellington in Alexandra. He made his T20 debut on 2 November 2012 against Northern Diss in Hamilton. He was part of the Otago cricket team, nicknamed the Volts, a New Zealand first-class cricket team from September 2011 to April 2017.
He joined the Wellington cricket team in September 2017 and later became the captain of the team. In June 2018, he signed a contract with the Wellington Firebirds for the 2018–2019 season. In March 2020, he played the 2019–20 Plunket Shield season and took his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket in the sixth round. In June 2020, he was re-signed by Wellington ahead of the 2020–21 domestic cricket season. On 8 January 2022, during the 2021–22 Super Smash Tournament, Bracewell scored 141 for the Wellington Firebirds against the Central Stags, the highest score in a Twenty20 cricket match in New Zealand.
International cricket
In March 2022, he was selected in New Zealand’s One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads for the home series against the Netherlands. In May 2022, he was selected in the New Zealand Test squad for their tour of England. In July 2022, he played an ODI match against Ireland and scored his maiden century. On 20 July 2022, in a T20I series against Ireland, Bracewell took his first hat-trick in T20I cricket, his first bowling performance in an international match. In December 2022, he was selected for the New Zealand national cricket team in all three forms of the game. In January 2023, in an ODI match against India, he scored the third fastest century for New Zealand. After his release, he became the only batsman to score more than a century, and was ranked seventh or lower behind MS Dhoni. Chasing a match-winning 350 in the ODI against India, Michael produced an extraordinary performance as New Zealand slumped to 131/6. He played at number 7 and scored 140 runs from 78 deliveries. Everyone appreciated his performance, but the team did not win the match. In an interview, he talked about his performance and said:
T20 has had a huge impact on one day cricket and that is what makes one day cricket so exciting. You can be in the position we were in and you can still work your way into a position of power. “I don’t think we got into a position of power, but we got into a position where we could win the game.”
On 31 March 2023, ahead of the IPL series, he played in the team’s practice match and scored 105 off 55 balls, including 8 fours and 7 sixes.
