Controversy of the oval test
In 2006, Inzamam captained a controversial Test match against England when they were accused of ball tampering by the England team and the referees awarded 5 penalties, suggesting the team had done something with the ball. The Pakistan team refused to play after the tea break and after an hour’s wait, the umpires removed the stumps and declared England the match winners, and Inzamam was banned from the ODI series against England. When asked about this, Inzamam said:
“He felt the ball was spoiled and conceded five runs to the opposition. And under ICC rules, that meant we were guilty of it. So I went to Darrell Herr and asked him what was wrong with the ball. As per the ICC rule, the umpire informs the player whether he is guilty before awarding these five runs. However, I was not informed. Then I decided that I cannot lead such a team and waited 15-20 minutes to show everyone that the whole team protested the decision.”
The ICC later changed the match result to “Match Abandoned Draw” after protests by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Comments on Indian batsmen
In an interview with another Pakistani legend, Ramiz Raja, he said:
“When we played against India, their batting was stronger than ours on paper. But even our batsmen scored 30 or 40 runs, that was for the team, but for India, even if they scored 100 runs, they were playing for themselves, so that was the difference between the two sides.
Sourav Ganguly’s controversial catch
In 1999, India were playing against Pakistan and Sourav Ganguly was dismissed after a controversial catch by wicketkeeper Moeen Khan. India lost the Test match by 12 runs. Inzamam said in an interview with Indian spin bowler R. Ashwin,
“Two people participated in this case. One is Azhar Mahmood and the other is Moin Khan. As Sourav played the stroke, Azhar Mahmood was first hit on the body and then caught by Moeen Khan. I can’t tell you clearly about that because Azhar didn’t play that Test match. I was unwell in the second innings, so Azhar was substituted in my place. “I wasn’t there at the time, but I can say that the catch was suspicious.”
Controversy with the Pakistan Cricket Board
In 2013, differences between Inzamam-ul-Haq and the PCB hit the headlines when Inzamam-ul-Haq’s name was not announced by the PCB as a consultant for Pakistan’s tour of South Africa. According to Inzamam, PCB officials never contacted him to offer the position of bat consultant; However, according to PCB officials, they were trying to contact Inzamam. Inzamam spoke about this in an interview and said:
“I don’t know the reason for this, maybe the chairman of the board had a problem. I informed the board that I was interested in working with the players as a bat consultant. I did everything with them in the short time possible before the India tour. But when they didn’t contact me, what can I say.”
A fight with an Indian fan
In 1997, during a Sahara Cup match in Toronto, Canada, a fight broke out between Inzamam and an Indian cricket team fan from the stands when the fans started calling him “Aloo” (potato) and “Motu” (fat) from the stands. Inzamami got so angry that he entered the tribune and tried to beat him with a stick. He was taken out by the security, and the fan was kicked out of the stadium.
