Controversy
Accused of Mowing Down his Girlfriend Priya Singh
On 11 December 2023, Ashwajit Gaikwad and his friends allegedly invited Priya Singh to come to a party at the Court Yard Hotel at around 1 am in Ovla, Thane, after which she went to the hotel. According to Priya, Upon arriving at the venue around 3 am, she saw Ashwajit with another woman, reportedly identified as his wife by others. Despite multiple attempts, Ashwajit declined to engage in conversation with her. Simultaneously, his friend Romil Patil allegedly verbally abused her. When she requested Gaikwad to intervene and stop Patil from mistreating her, Ashwajit allegedly responded by slapping and strangling her, biting her hand, and forcefully pushing her away. Reportedly, after the assault and argument with Ashwajit and his friends, Priya Singh went to retrieve her bag and mobile phone from his SUV when the men assaulted her. According to her, they initially attempted to ram the SUV car (Land Rover Defender) into her from behind near a divider. They then came back and intentionally ran the vehicle over her right leg before swiftly leaving. As a result, she allegedly sustained injuries to her stomach, back, and arms, and her right leg is now in a cast. She is presently hospitalized in the ICU at Infinity Hospital in Thane. Ashwajit Gaikwad, along with Romil Patil and Sagar Shelke, were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 279 (rash driving), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and others at the Kasarvadavali police station. In an interview, while talking about the matter and the incident, she said,
I had a four-and-a-half-year relationship with my boyfriend. We were completely in love with each other. I did not know earlier that he was married. Later, when I came to know, he told me that they (his wife and him) were not together anymore and that they had separated. He said that he wanted to marry me. I had been staying with him for a long time. When I went to meet him that night, he was with his wife. I was in shock when I went to talk to him, after which he got aggressive and we had a fight.”
