Controversy

Challenged the decision of the ad-hoc panel

In July 2023, Antim challenged the decision of the ad-hoc panel to grant direct entry to Vinesh Phogat in the 53kg event of the 2022 Asian Games and raised questions about the fairness and transparency of the selection process in a petition to the High Court. In an interview, she raised questions about the criteria for selection, and said,

I won the trial fair and square. Why should I be the standby player in 53kg. My petition has been dismissed but I won’t stop, I will keep fighting, we will move the Supreme Court. If she keeps getting direct entries like this, how will one know how good we are? We will keep trying. My coach will decide what we are going to do next but the fight will continue. What’s the point of me winning three bouts? I know she is pretty good and has many medals but she must fight against us in the trials.”

Facts/Trivia

  • Antim’s name in the English language translates to “last” or “final,” and she is the last girl born into the Panghal family.
  • Antim developed an interest in wrestling when she was just 10 years old after her sister, Sarita Panghal, took her to see a wrestling competition organised at the Mahavir Stadium, Hisar, Haryana. Her father, Ram Niwas, was not sure about Antim pursuing a career in wrestling initially, but eventually supported her after Antim’s coach Roshni Devi kept insisting on him.
  • Antim in the initial phase of her training would commute 20 km every day to the Mahavir Stadium in Hisar along with, her sister Sarita, and her father Ram Niwas. Her father later arranged for her to shift to Hisar to avoid the commute. Sometime later her whole family moved to Hisar. Her father, in an interview, mentioned that he built a house with a cattle shed especially for Antim’s diet needs and said,

The buffaloes were non-negotiable. If my daughter had to wrestle, she had to get the best diet and I didn’t trust the milk you get in cities.”

  • In September 2023, Antim competed as a neutral athlete in the World Wrestling Championships organised by United World Wrestling (UWW) in Belgrade, Serbia and not under the Indian flag due to the suspension of WFI by UWW. Later, in an interview, Antim expressed her disappointment about not being able to play under the Indian flag, and said,

I won a bronze at the World Championship, but I was heartbroken because I could not even wear the India jersey. I had to wear the costume given by UWW. It hurt a lot that I could not represent India.”

  • In 2023, she won the selection trials for the 2022 Asian Games but despite that, she was not selected to represent India since Vinesh Phogat had been granted direct entry for the women’s 53kg category at the continental meet by the federation. Nevertheless, Antim Panghal, who was Vinesh’s backup, got a chance to represent India at the Asian Games in Hangzhou due to a last-minute injury to Vinesh in which she also went on to win the bronze medal.
  • In December 2023, Antim Panghal was named the women’s Rising Star of the Year 2023 by United World Wrestling (UWW), the international governing body for the sport of amateur wrestling.
  • In December 2023, she was confirmed as one of the recipients of the Arjuna Award for her excellence in wrestling.
