Vece Paes is a former Indian hockey player. He was in the Indian hockey team during the 1972 Munich Olympics. He is the father of well-known Indian tennis player Leander Paes. Vece is also a certified sports medicine doctor. He served as the president of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club.

Jennifer Paes, who was previously known as Jennifer Dutton, is the wife of Vece Paes. She used to play basketball and was part of the Indian basketball team in the 1972 Olympics. She later became the captain of the basketball team in 1982.
Jennifer Paes comes from a notable family in Bengal. Her great-grandfather was a well-known Bengali poet named Michael Madhusudan Dutt.
His son, Leander Paes, is a prominent Indian tennis player. Vece Paes has two daughters named Jacqueline Christina Paes and Maria Paes.
His father-in-law, Michael Dutton, and his mother-in-law, Ruby Myrtle Nyss, were from a reputed family in Calcutta. His granddaughter’s name is Aiyana Paes.
In 1964 and 1965, Vece Paes was preparing for medicine at Presidency College in Calcutta. Then, from 1974 to 1983, he worked as a general surgeon in medicine. After that, from 1984 to 2000, he practised medicine for companies and sports in Calcutta. Since 1991, Vece Paes has been helping the Indian Tennis Association as a Sports Medical Consultant. From 1996 to 2001, he worked with the All India Football Association. He also gives medical help to the Indian Olympic Association during the Olympic Games and Asian Games.
Vece Paes used to be a midfielder in the Indian hockey team. He played for the Indian Hockey Team from 1965 to 1972. He took part in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and the 1971 Barcelona World Cup. Besides hockey, he also played sports like cricket, soccer, hockey, and rugby at the divisional level. He was the President of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.
In 2023, Vece Paes received the ‘Unsung Hero’ award at the Sportstar East Sports Conclave 2023 in Kolkata.
- Vece Paes has his mother’s house in Velim, Goa, and he and his family often go to Velim for vacations. Vece Paes lives in Mumbai with his family. Like many other Goan Catholic families from AVC villages (Assolna, Velim, Cuncolim), Leander’s grandfather, Dr Peter Paes, went to work in Africa. Dr Peter Paes was a doctor in Arusha, Tanzania, for a long time. Afterwards, he came back to live with his son Vece Paes in Kolkata.
- Vece Paes is respected in the sports field for his services at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and BCCI. He is known for overseeing anti-doping education programs under BCCI and ACC.
- In 2022, a cricket match titled the Dr Vece Paes Cricket Cup was organised in Kolkata to honour Vece Paes’ life. Leander Paes, Yusuf Pathan, and Dr Vece Paes were photographed by the media with their jerseys before the match at the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club.
