Sulochana Latkar was an Indian actor who acted in more than two hundred and fifty Hindi and Marathi films such as Sujata (1959), Sampoorna Ramayana (1961), Johnny Meera Naam (1970) and Kora Kagaz (1974). Sulochana rose to fame after playing the roles of famous actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna in many films. In June 2023, he breathed his last in a hospital in Mumbai.

Sulochana Latkar was born as Nagabai on Monday 30 July 1928, while some sources claim that she was born on Thursday 30 July 1929 (aged 93 or 94 at the time of death) in Khadaklat village, Belgaum District, Bombay Presidency, British India (now Belagavi District, Kardian). His zodiac sign is Leo. He studied in the primary school in his native village until the 5th grade, after which he had to drop out because his parents died.

Due to an outbreak of plague in Sulochana’s native village, she moved with her brother and aunt to Chikode, Karnataka, where they stayed at the home of her father’s lawyer friend. There he met Master Vinayak, a film producer and owner of Prafulla Pictures, who offered him a job at his production company in Kolhapur; He accepted the offer and paid the salary. 30 per month. While working for Prafulla Pictures, Sulochana appeared in several films as an extra. He later quit as he was not ready to move to Bombay (now Mumbai) where Prafulla Pictures had moved. He was then employed by Bhalji Pendarkar at his film studio Jayaprabha Studio on a monthly salary. 30. He quit his job in 1948 after his studio was burnt down by protesters after Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. While interacting with the media, Sulochana said that the studio was vandalized by protesters as Bhalji was an ardent supporter of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Nathuram Godse was associated with the RSS. After Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, riots against Brahmins and RSS members spread across Maharashtra. As a result, many people died and many properties were burnt, including the Jayaprabha Studio. And Bhalji Pendharkar was arrested at that time. In this situation, he fired all the studio employees after giving them two months salary.

In the same year Sulochana moved from Kolhapur to Pune where he started working with Mangal Pictures.

He played a small role in the 1943 Marathi film Chimukla Sansar.

In 1944, he got a role in the Hindi mythological film Maharathi Karna. He landed a role in the 1946 Tamil film Valmiki. Sulochana played her first lead role in the 1947 Marathi film Sasuravaas. In 1948, she appeared in the Marathi film Jeevacha Sakha. She came into limelight in 1952 after the release of her Marathi film Stree Janma Hi Tujhi Kahani. In 1953, he moved to Bombay from Pune. Sulochna Latkar starred in the 1954 Hindi film Aurat Teri Yahi Kahani, which was a remake of the 1952 Marathi film Stri Janma Hai Thuji Kahani.

In 1954, she appeared with actor Surendra Nath in the Hindi film Mahatma Kabir. She stopped receiving acting offers after the release of her mythological Hindi film Sati Ansuya in 1956. In an interview, she explained the reasons for not getting any acting offers after the release of Sati Ansua, saying that in those days, actors working in mythological films were considered inferior to actors working in non-mythological films. Sulochana acted in several Hindi and Marathi films, including Sampoorna Ramayana (1961) as Kaikeyi, Maratha Tituka Melwawa (1964) as Jijabai, Kathy Patang (1970) as Mrs. Dinanath, Kahani Kismat Ki (1973) as Mrs. Sharma and Khaadna, 1973. Bhuttacha (1982) as Radha Mava, Andha Kanun (1983), Sasu Varchad Javai (1984) and Khun Bhari Maang (1988) as Shatrughan Sinha’s mother.

death

Sulochana Latkar passed away due to age-related illness at Shushusha Hospital in Dadar, Mumbai on June 4, 2023 at 6:30 pm. Following his death, the family released an official statement, which read:

He had age-related health problems and difficulty breathing. He died today at 6 o’clock. It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of our beloved grandmother, Smt. Sulochana Didi was a long-term illness related to age.

He was cremated at the Shivaji Park Crematorium in Dadar, Mumbai on 5 June 2023 with full state honours.
