Before pursuing her acting career in India, Sonia worked with a start-up finance company in New York. In an interview, she revealed that she dreamed of becoming an actress since childhood and said:
I always wanted to be an actor since childhood. But then we all grew up and went to college and were like, “Oh, this is real, maybe I’ll be in finance.” So that’s what I did. I did finance and marketing and worked in New York. I did that for a year, and then I got bored at work and started taking acting classes. I started my own dance company. And then one fine day I quit my job. My mom and dad were like, “We won’t let you go to India until you can get a full-time career in New York.” So I got a full career in New York and then I came here.
