Pallavi Dey (1997–2022), also known as Pallabi Dey, was an Indian actress and model who worked in Bengali television. Since 2022, she has been playing the role of ‘Gauri’ in the Bengali TV serial ‘Mon Mane Na’. On 15 May 2022, he was found dead in his rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata.

Pallavi Dey made her acting debut in 2017 with the Bengali TV serial ‘Tobu Mone Rekho’ as Supriya.

In 2018, she appeared in the Bengali television historical series ‘Aami Sirajer Begum’ as Lutfunnisa Begum. Sean Banerjee played the main male role in the series. Although the show had a short run, Pallavi enjoyed good fan following as the female lead. She came into limelight after playing a meaty role in the TV series ‘Resham Jhanpi’ (2018).

He subsequently appeared in the Bengali television series ‘Kunjo Chaya’ (2019) and ‘Saraswatir Prem’ (2020). From 2022, she played the female lead Gauri in the film Mon Mane Na opposite Bengali actor Sam Bhattacharya.

On 15 May 2022, Pallavi Dey was found dead in her rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata. According to the police, he was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the room. The investigator said in an official statement,
The actor was found hanging from the ceiling fan with the help of a bed sheet. The incident happened around 09:30. A case of unnatural death has been reported.”
As the police reached the spot, he was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital, Kolkata, where he was declared brought dead. Based on the initial investigation, the police suspect that Pallavi committed suicide. Speaking to the media, the investigating officer said,
Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide. However, a final conclusion can only be made once the post-mortem report is available. We have started an investigation after filing a case of unnatural death.”
The police also questioned Sagnik Chakraborty (Palavi’s boyfriend) who told the police that he had gone out to buy cigarettes from the market and on returning found the door locked from inside. He entered the door and found the dead body of Pallavi hanging from the window. He immediately informed the police about it.
While police suspected it was suicide, Pallavi’s family claimed foul play. Speaking to the media, his father Nilu Dey said:
His partner had a registered marriage with someone else two years ago and we learned about it six months ago. There was another girl with whom he was close and this often caused problems in their relationship. We don’t know who saw him hanging.”
They told the police that Chakraborty forced Pallavi to pay for the flat he bought in Rajarhat. However, Chakraborty’s mother denied the allegations saying:
The flat in Rajarhat, which Pallavi’s parents claim was bought with his money, we bought. Pallavi did not contribute anything. We paid 43 million GEL in cash and took a loan to pay the remaining amount.”
Her parents also claimed that Chakraborty was financially dependent on their daughter Pallavi. Two of them bought a luxury apartment in New Town, the cost of which was 100 GEL. 60 GEL (at the expense of Pallavi Day).
However, Sagnik’s parents denied all the allegations and said that Pallav and Sagnik never had any serious problems. Speaking to the media, Sagnik’s mother said:
They used to live together. Although we did not have full support, we gave them a chance because they are adults. I asked Sagnik several times to stay somewhere else and start together when they got married. They had no serious problems. I do not know what happened”.
Later, Pallavi’s father filed a complaint against Sagnik with the Kolkata police that he and the woman had killed his daughter. Based on a complaint by Pallavi’s father, Sagnik was called to Garfa Police Station on 16 May 2022 and was interrogated for about 18 hours at the police station. He was later arrested for concealing important information about his employment and joint financial investments with Dey. Sagnik Chakraborty has been booked under IPC sections related to murder, cheating, breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and misappropriation of property, according to Atul V, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Kolkata Police’s South Suburban Division. He also said that the arrest was based on a financial fraud committed by Chakraborty. Speaking to the media about Chakraborty, the investigator said,
Chakraborty’s statements revealed several inconsistencies regarding his activities and source of income. We discovered that he closed the Salt Lake office a week before the victim’s death and is currently unemployed. However, he did not say that when we asked him about his profession.”
Pallavi’s report showed no signs of injuries and confirmed that the actor committed suicide.
The news of his death left his co-stars and fans in deep shock. His death was mourned by many of his co-stars on social media. His co-star Mon Mane Na Samm expressed his pain on his Instagram account. he wrote
I have no words to justify what I witnessed today. Such an incident is unimaginable even in the wildest dreams.”
