Mangal Dhillon (1974-2023) was an Indian actor, writer, film producer, director and poet. He is known for playing the role of Labhaya Ram in the Hindi television serial ‘Buniyaad’ (1986) which aired on DD National. On 11 June 2023, he breathed his last after a battle with cancer in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Mangal Singh Dhillon was born on Tuesday 18 June 1974 (age 48 at time of death) in Vander Jatana Village, Faridkot Tehsil, Faridkot District, Punjab, India. His zodiac sign is Gemini. He studied in Govt Sr Sec School Panjgrain, Kalan, Faridkot till class 4th. He continued his education at Zila Parishad High School, Nighasan District, Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. He then completed his graduation in Theater Arts from Government College, Muksar. In 1980, he received his Post Graduate Diploma in Method Acting from the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University, Punjab, India. He was awarded the Gold Medal for Outstanding Performance by an Actor by the University’s Drama Department after completing his studies. During his studies in college, he acted in various theater productions.

In 1978, he began his career as a theater artist with a theater group in Delhi. He then worked in various radio plays in Chandigarh, Delhi and Mumbai. Some of his popular theater plays are ‘Theatrewala Urf Pagal Hai’ (1996), ‘Baazi’ (1984), ‘Baba Bolda Hai’ (1986), ‘Sandhya Chhaya’ (1984) and ‘Aaj Ka Jarasandh’ (1983).

In 1986, he started his television acting career with the Hindi serial ‘Katha Sagar’ which aired on DD National. He played various roles in the series.

- It was in Chandigarh that he honed his skills as an actor. He was a village boy when he came after an argument with his father. He didn’t have a penny in his pocket. In 1982, he created his own theater group called Natalia.
- His father wanted him to become a policeman or a lawyer, but these professions did not inspire him. By the time he graduated from Government College in Muksar, he had already decided to pursue a career as a radio broadcaster or teacher. However, his interest in theater grew.
- Many years ago, Mangal Dhillon’s life underwent a transformation when he began to connect with God. In an interview, he said that he communicated with God and received answers to his questions. He created a site dedicated to meditation in Sikhism. In addition, he formed a social welfare trust with the aim of helping people to “wake up” and move forward on their own spiritual paths. He considered himself fortunate to serve as a channel for God to deliver His messages. Apart from this, the foundation also focuses on creating awareness about Sikh history through films.
- Mangal Dhillon underwent a significant change in his approach to films when he came across the Catholic Church Father’s thoughts on Sikh history. The father expressed his belief that the Sikhs would not show their blood-soaked and unparalleled history to the world, unlike Christianity, which spread throughout the world with the story of Jesus Christ. These words saddened and deeply affected Mangal as he was considered unacceptable and disgraceful to the entire Sikh community. Motivated by this realization, he decided to postpone his career in film and television. With great passion, he dedicated himself to preserving Sikh history for the world and future generations.
- In 2009, he started his YouTube channel ‘Mangal Dhillon Channel’ where he uploads spiritual and motivational videos.
