After graduation, he studied at Zakir Hussain Delhi College, Delhi University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.); However, later he changed his stream from commerce to arts as most of his friends started preparing for UPSC exam and they suggested him to follow the same after which he did BA in History from Delhi University. According to Dr. Vikas, while he was in his third year of studies, his family shifted from Bhiwani to Faridabad in Haryana. He then completed his MA in Hindi Literature at Zakir Hussain College through evening classes as he could not get admission in the Delhi University campus. He completed his Masters Finals at Hindu College. While he was pursuing his final year of Masters, he cleared the UGC NET JRF exam and received a stipend of Rs 2,500 per month. Vika also holds MA (Sociology), M. Phil, LLB and Ph.D. degrees. Vikas was interested in language translation, so he also did a post-graduate course in English-Hindi translation from Delhi University.

Religion/Religious Beliefs

Dr. Vikas believes in agnosticism. In an interview, he revealed that he was greatly influenced by Osho after reading his books while studying at Delhi University. He also revealed that he was heavily influenced by Karl Marx and Max Weber and lived as an atheist for several years.

Student politics

He became interested in politics from his school days and won almost all the parliamentary elections held in his school. After finishing school in Bhiwani, Haryana, he moved to Delhi, where he attended Zakir Husain Delhi College, University of Delhi. According to Dr. Vikas, he went to Delhi University to pursue a career in politics because his father wanted him to become a politician and he became a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). During his first year at Zakir Hussain, he became very popular and actively participated in the national agitation against the Mandal Commission set up by the Janata Party government under Prime Minister Morarji Desai in 1979. According to Dr. Vikas, he wanted to participate in student elections and become the student union president; However, he was offered not to participate in the elections, as it would endanger his life, and he refused to participate in the elections. In an interview, he revealed that he was very good at debating and had won many cash prizes in various debates held at Delhi University.

After getting his Master of Arts degree, he decided to appear for the UPSC exam. In 1996, he appeared for the UPSC examination and cleared it in his first attempt with sociology as an optional; He got the 384th rank. Vikas has been posted as Assistant Commandant of CISF; However, he was found medically unfit for the position because he had flat feet. Later he joined the Central Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The following year he made a second attempt; However, he could not pass the main examination. During his doctoral studies he gave a third attempt at philosophy as an elective; However, he failed the interview round. In 1999, he received a letter of accession to the Central Secretariat; However, he did not join. He later joined the service because he was in debt at the time and his only motive for joining was to get rid of his debt. He was given a position in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and at his request was assigned to the Rajbasha Division, where he was appointed as a Divisional Officer; However, he resigned after six months of service. In 2003, he gave his 4th and final attempt, but again failed to qualify the exam; He made this attempt while teaching at his coaching institute, Drishti IAS.

According to Dr. Vikas, he started Drishti IAS after he was rejected as a Hindi lecturer at Shivaji College, Delhi University. He started Drishti after borrowing around Rs 15k from his IAS friends and rented chairs and classrooms to start coaching classes. He started by giving his lectures in Hindi which made it easy for the students to understand the topics and the first batch had around 12-15 aspirants. He later started teaching philosophy and taught the subject for about 11 years until 2011.
