A shocking accident at a well-known West Cork beauty spot claimed the life of a DAD in his 40s on Saturday night.
The man, 44-year-old David Latten of Clonakilty, was camped on Cape Clear Island, which is off the coast of Cork. When the soccer ball fell off the cliff, the father of three was playing soccer with his family at the time.
It is possible that he fell on wet rocks while trying to catch the ball, severely injuring his head. His wife got worried when he didn’t come home and started looking for him.

Both the neighborhood coast guard bases and the emergency services received notices. Shannon’s 115 Rescue Helicopter was called in to assist in the search by the Coast Guard Station on Valencia Island.
The Baltimore RNLI boat headed for the side of the island where Mr Latten was last seen. While this was going on, a sailor on a rib noticed a body on the rocks below the cliffs and alerted the authorities.
The crew found and took the body to the Baltimore Lifeboat Station, where a local doctor pronounced it dead.
According to a statement from the Baltimore RNLI, the Valentia Coastguard asked for them to be launched last night at 8:10pm as a result of information that someone was in the ocean off Cape Clear in West Cork.
They said: “The all-weather and inshore lifeboats were launched, and lifeboat workers pulled one person out of the water and transported him aboard the inshore lifeboat.
They returned to the Baltimore lifeboat station before turning the matter over to emergency personnel.

A “devoted father” and “much loved husband”, David Latten has received an avalanche of tributes after he died in Cork on Saturday as a result of an accident.
