Shraddha Bindroo is an Indian Associate Professor of Medicine at PGI Chandigarh, India. She is famous as the daughter of the assassinated Kashmiri Pandit Makhan Lal Bindroo.

He was born into a Kashmiri Hindu Pandit family. His father, Makhan Lal Bindroo, was the owner of Bindroo Medicare in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Makhan had two pharmacies of his own, which were opened by his father, the late Rakeshwar Nath Bindroo, in 1947. Shraddha’s mother, Kiran Bindroo, works in her pharmacy. His brother, Dr. Siddharth Bindroo, is a famous diabetologist in Kashmir, India.

Father killed in a terrorist attack
During the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in India, Shraddha’s father Makhan Lal Bindroo and his family decided to stay in Kashmir and serve the state. He owned a pharmacy in Indira Nagar, Srinagar. He was one of the most popular pharmacists in town. On October 5, 2021, terrorists killed Makhan Lal Bindroo, along with two other civilians, in Srinagar. While Makhan Lal was in his pharmacy, the terrorists shot him dead.

Although he was rushed to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, he had already died before reaching the hospital. The other two civilians killed in the attack were Mohd Shafi Lone in Shahgund area of Bandipora, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, and Virender Paswan (a street vendor) near Madina Chowk, Lalbazar in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. According to local police officials,
Makhan Lal Bindroo received four bullets and was pronounced dead at SMHS hospital. Bindroo, a famous chemist in the area, had been operating his pharmacy in Srinagar for many decades and was also known for his philanthropic works.
At his death, several politicians shared his pain. Jammu and Kashmir Peoples’ Democratic Party Chairman Mehbooba Mufti said:
With the recent spate of killings of civilians in Kashmir, the GOI’s false narrative of normalcy is in tatters. A completely desensitized government that has devalued human lives and pushed J&K into further danger and chaos by its ruthless collective punishment policies, all under the cloak of security.”
Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Governor Manoj Sinha said:
I strongly condemn this cowardly act. My condolences to the bereaved family. The perpetrators of this heinous act will be brought to justice very soon.”
While speaking to reporters, Makhan Lal’s son said:
Condolences pour in from people from all walks of life. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, everyone is here and if it hadn’t been for covid, thousands of people would have come. He was a man loved by all and had no rivalry with anyone.
Later, Junaid Azim Mattu, Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), said that a road in Srinagar would be named after Makhan Lal Bindroo. He further said,
The road from Haft Chinar Chowk to Jehangir Chowk (where Bindroo Medicare is located) will be named Shaheed Makhan Lal Bindroo Road as a tribute to his contributions to society.”

Shraddha’s comments made her a hero
After the death of Shraddha’s father, reporters interviewed her. Her brave comments made her a hero, and as soon as the video went viral on social media, it received great appreciation from netizens. When asked by reporters about the death of her father, she said:
My father was a fighter, he always said ‘I’ll die with my shoes on’. You can kill a person, but you cannot kill the spirit of Makhan Lal. Whoever shot my father dead, come before me. My father gave me an education, while the politicians gave you weapons and stones. Do you want to fight with guns and stones? That is cowardice. All the politicians are using you, come and fight politely.”
While pointing at the attackers, he said:
Sir, who shot my father to death while working, if you have the guts and courage, come and have a face-to-face debate with us. Then we’ll see what you are. You won’t be able to utter a word. All you can do is throw rocks and shoot bullets in the back.”
She further said,
My father was an amazing person who served Kashmir and Kashmiriyat. His body is gone but his spirit lives on. The person responsible for the crime has opened the gates of hell”.
While talking about his family, Shraddha said:
I am an associate professor. I started from scratch; my father started with a bicycle, my brother is a famous diabetologist, my mother sits in the shop, that’s what Makhan Lal Bindroo made us. A Kashmiri Pandit, he will never die. Despite being a Hindu, I have read the Qur’an. The Qur’an says that you can kill the body, the spirit lives on. Bindroo will remain alive in spirit.”
