Shabnam Shakil is an Indian cricketer, who plays for the U-19 Indian Women’s cricket team primarily as a bowler. A right-hand batsman and a right-arm medium pacer, Shabnam was a part of the Indian squad that won the inaugural Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup in 2023.

Shabnam Shakil, also known as Shabnam Md Shakil , was born on Sunday, 17 June 2007 (age 15 years; as of 2022) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Her zodiac sign is Gemini. As of 2023, she is pursuing her class 10 at Siva Sivani School in Marripalem, Visakhapatnam . Shabnam Shakil developed an interest in cricket at a young age after watching her father, who was a fast pacer and played club cricket. After noticing her passion towards cricket, her father enrolled her at NAD Academy in Visakhapatnam when she was eight years old. At the academy, she was trained by coach Nagaraju. Meanwhile, she also practised cricket at Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) ground in the evening, where she was trained by Satish Reddy and Krishna Rao.

Parents & Siblings

Shabnam Shakil’s father, Md. Shakil, is a leading firefighter at INS Kalinga. Her mother, K Eswaramma, works in the Indian navy. Shabnam has a younger sister, Shahjahan Begum, who is a fast bowler and plays cricket for U-15 Andhra Pradesh women.

Domestic

Until 2021, Shabnam used to play cricket at the district level. In 2021, she made her U-19 debut for Andhra Pradesh. After an excellent performance in the domestic tournament, Shabnam was selected for the ZCA. She then played a few matches at the Zonal level, where she caught the eyes of the Indian selectors for her ability to bowl at 110 Kmph and was selected for a camp at the National Cricket Academy.

International

At the NCA, Shabnam, along with 25 other girls, trained for the Quadrangular Series. In 2022, she was drafted into the India U-19 squad which played against New Zealand in a five-match T20 series from 27 November 2022 to 6 December 2022 at the MCA Bandra Kurla Complex ground in Mumbai. Meanwhile, she also played for India B Women Under-19 at the Women’s U19 T20 Quadrangular Series that featured India A, India B, Sri Lanka, and West Indies. In the series, Shabnam picked up two wickets in four overs against India A. She bowled 18 dot balls in the match. Soon, she found a berth in the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup. Shabnam played only two matches in the tournament.

  • In an interview, when asked how she managed to bowl at a speed of 110kph at the age of just 15, Shabnam replied,

    My coach always says that everything is in the name. You are a fast bowler, so you have to bowl nothing but fast. From the day I started playing cricket, my only aim was to bowl as fast as possible. Gradually I developed good bouncers. I aim at the batter’s ribs when I am bowling.”
