- In 2016, when Tay was fifteen years old, he was sent to a youth detention center for robbery. Tjay remained in custody and was released in 2017. In an interview, he recalled the days of imprisonment and said:
It wasn’t fun. It’s not something I want to do, but I’ve learned a lot. I feel like if I hadn’t gone to prison I probably wouldn’t be who I am – I wouldn’t be. Because I wouldn’t sit down and write these songs and I would never be able to focus on what I want to achieve. So it was like that was a really good thing for me.
