Rakesh Bedi is an Indian theater artist and film and television actor. He is known for his role as War in the Hindi film ‘Chashme Buddoor’ (1981) and Dilruba Jarnail Singh Khurana aka Dilruba in the Hindi serial ‘Shrimaan Shrimati’ (1982) which aired on DD National.

Rakesh started his career as a theater artist. He has long been associated with various theater groups such as Pierros Das, Delhi and Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He has done many Hindi theater productions and some of his popular theater productions are Massage, Jab we broke up and Pate Khul Gay. He played 24 different characters in the theater performance “Massage”.

  • While Rakesh was in school, he participated in various mono-actor and drama competitions. Although he was inclined towards acting and wanted to become an actor, his parents disapproved and wanted him to pursue a career as a mining engineer. On his father’s advice, he appeared for the entrance exam to the engineering faculty. However, he attempted the exam for only 5 minutes and returned the answer sheet to the examiner as he realized that engineering was not for him.
  • In an interview, recalling his school days, he said that during his senior secondary exams, he did poorly in the theory paper of chemistry and relied on passing marks for practice. She said,

    The school teacher who came to assess the practical test was told that I had placed first in the Delhi Mono Acting Competition and second in the Delhi Mono Acting Competition and second in the All India Mono Acting Competition and since I had attended these competitions I was not well prepared. Hearing this, the teacher took me to his room, locked me and asked me to perform. He was thoroughly entertained and kept laughing. It was then that I realized that acting was my calling.”

  • In an interview, he shared how he got his first offer for a Hindi film. In 1976, he was speaking at the convocation function of FTII, Pune. Indian film producer GP Sippy was invited to the event as the chief guest. After watching Rakesh’s performance, Sippy offered him a role in the Hindi film Ahsaas. For the film, he received 1500-2000 rubles, which he spent on the treatment of his friends.
  • In 1972, he founded the theater group Ankur Arts in Delhi.
