Domestic

Kuldeep Yadav plays domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh. He made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in the 2016-17 season of the Ranji Trophy. In the 2016 Duleep Trophy, he took 17 wickets in three matches.

Under-19

In the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, he was India’s leading wicket-taker and became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in the history of the tournament; he achieved the feat against Scotland.

Test

On 25 March 2017, he made his Test debut against Australia at the Dharamshala Cricket Stadium, where he took four wickets in the first innings, making him only the third such bowler in Test cricket to take four wickets on debut. He also became the first left-arm wrist spin bowler to play a Test for India.

Earlier, he was selected in the Indian squad to play against the West Indies; however, he did not play any matches. On 6 October 2018, he took his first five-wicket haul in a Test match against the West Indies. His second five-wicket haul came in the fourth Test against Australia at the SCG on 6 January 2019.

ODI

On 23 June 2017, he made his ODI debut against the West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval; however, he could not deliver even a single ball as the first match ended without a result due to rain; he took three wickets in the second match of the series and became the joint highest wicket-taker of the tournament. On 21 September 2017, Kuldeep took a hat-trick against Australia at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, joining the league of cricketers like Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev.

 

On 12 July 2018, he took his first five-wicket haul in an ODI against England, setting a record for best bowling figures (6/25) by a left-arm spin bowler of any kind in an ODI. On 18 December 2019, he became the first Indian to take two hat-tricks in ODIs; he achieved the feat in a match against the West Indies. In the 2023 Asia Cup, he became the fifth Indian to claim a five-wicket haul against Pakistan, joining the league of Sourav Ganguly, Arshad Ayub, Venkatesh Prasad, and Sachin Tendulkar.

World Cup

In April 2019, he was selected in the Indian squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in which he played 7 matches and took 6 wickets. In the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, he took 7 wickets.

T20

On 9 July 2017, he made his T20I debut against the West Indies at Sabina Park. On 3 July 2018, he took his first five-wicket haul in a T20I against England, becoming the first left-arm wrist-spin bowler to take five wickets in a T20I. In December 2023, he became the second Indian bowler and first Indian spinner to pick up multiple five-wicket hauls in T20Is after Bhuvneshwar Kumar; he achieved the feat on his 29th birthday in a match against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium.

IPL

Although he was signed by the Mumbai Indians for the 2012 Indian Premier League, he didn’t play in any game. In 2014, he was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders, and he again couldn’t make it into the playing XI. In the 2016 IPL, he took 6 wickets in three games for the Kolkata Knight Riders. In the 2017 IPL, he took 12 wickets in 12 games for the KKR.

After a poor performance in the 2020 IPL in which he picked just 1 wicket in four games, he was dropped from KKR’s playing XI. In the 2022 IPL, he was picked up by the Delhi Capitals, and he took 21 wickets in 14 games. He was retained by the Delhi Capitals in the 2023 edition of the tournament.

  • When Kuldeep joined the cricket academy of his childhood coach Kapil Pandey in Kanpur, he wanted to become a fast bowler like Zaheer Khan and Wasim Akram; however, his coach suggested he become a chinaman, a rare variety of spin bowling. In an interview, Kapil Pandey talked about this and said,

    I asked him to switch to chinaman, a much rarer variety of bowling. The change was not easy but he soon realised that bowling spin was the way forward for him.”

  • On the suggestion of his coach Kapil Pandey, Kuldeep decided to become a spin bowler and started watching the videos of Shane Warne. In an interview, Kuldeep said,

    I keep watching videos of Warne. His grip of the ball, length of deliveries and use of the crease are unbeatable. I try to learn from the footage.”

  • According to Kuldeep, when he was not selected for Uttar Pradesh’s under-15 team, he became so disappointed that he started thinking of committing suicide; he was 13 years old at the time. In an interview, he talked about this and said,

    I had worked hard for my selection, but when I was not picked, I mentioned suicide in frustration. It happens to everyone in the heat of the moment.”
