Wiki/Biography
Madhuri Bharadwaj was born on Friday, June 29, 1973 (age 46 Years; as of 2019) in a village in the Aligarh District of Uttar Pradesh. Her hometown is Agra. After her education, she followed BAMS in Aligarh.
She met her future husband, Dr. Brij Mohan Bharadwaj when she was studying in the ninth grade in Aligarh. At that time, Brij Mohan Bharadwaj was studying at a university in Aligarh. Madhuri and Mohan used to travel by bus to attend school and university respectively. On the bus, they would discuss an unusual topic for two teenagers. They would talk about their shared dream; a meaningful life, dedicated to helping those in need. In Madhuri, Mohan found an echo of her own mission. Mohan and Madhuri planned to be partners in this venture. Eight years after they met, they decided to become life partners and were married on December 8, 1993. However, they decided never to have children of their own; as they wanted to invest all their energy in the sick and the homeless. Both became doctors and began to bring the sick abandoned from the streets to their homes.
Apna Ghar: A roof for the homeless and destitute
After seven years of marriage, Dr. Brij Mohan Bhardwaj and Dr. Madhuri Bharadwaj established ‘Maa Madhuri Brij Varis Sewa Sadan, Apna Ghar’ on June 29, 2000, Madhuri’s 27th birthday in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. Apna Ghar went on to become a home for the homeless and destitute, the sick and the lost who are found wandering public spaces. Today, there are 21 ashrams in India – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi – providing shelter for the sick and homeless. Volunteers from Apna Ghar Sewa Samitis have established Apna Ghar Helplines, which provide immediate services to the homeless and destitute. More than 30 ambulances work around the clock to bring them to the ashrams for help.
Financing and expenses
Although most ashrams are run on public support, the ashrams in Kota and Ajmer are partially supported by the Government of Rajasthan. Each ashram displays a board outside of it; mentioning the daily needs of the ashrams, and in most cases they are met by donations from visitors. The organization often runs crowdfunding campaigns to increase costs.
