Darvesh Singh was a lawyer from Uttar Pradesh. She was the President of the Uttar Pradesh Lawyers Council. She was gunned down by another attorney just two days after she was named BAR Board President on June 12, 2019.

Darvesh Singh was born in 1981 (age 38 years; at time of death) in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. His full name was Darvesh Singh Yadav. He studied at a local school in Etah, UP. He obtained a Law Degree from Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra (now Agra University). He started practicing law in 2004 and used to share an office with Manish Babu Sharma. Manish was older than her and was in the same university as her.

Darvesh Singh Yadav belonged to the Other Backward Caste (OBC). She was from Etah, UP and her ancestral village was Chandpur in UP. Her parents had passed away when she was a teenager. Her father was a retired UP Police officer. Her mother was a Deputy Inspector of the UP Police. She had a younger brother and a younger sister, Kanchan. Her younger sister was offered a job as a sub-inspector with the UP police after her mother died while she was on duty. Kanchan had completed her police training in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, just three days before Darvesh was elected president of the Lawyers Council.

Career

Darvesh began his career practicing law in Etah with his superior Manish Babu Sharma. She worked there for 5 years then moved to Agra in 2009. She rose very quickly in her career. In 2014, she was elected Vice President of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Association; she was the first woman to be elected Vice President of the UP Bar Council.

Many people said that Darvesh was a very caring person. She cared for people, attended the funerals of the people she knew, attended functions she was invited to, and always greeted everyone with a smile. She wanted to become president of the Bar Association in 2019 and, for that, she had to convince everyone on the council to elect her. She had also offered many changes and improvements to the existing system. She had promised to establish libraries at UP for members of the Bar Association. She wanted to offer compensation for the relatives of defenders who died in accidents and medical expenses for sick defenders. She also promised cameras for the lesser lawyers.

On June 10, 2019, she was elected President of the UP Bar Council. She was in a tie with another lawyer and it was decided that they would rotate the responsibility of the President every six months. She was ready to be the first president. She was appreciated and praised across India for being the first woman to become the President of the UP Bar Council.

Death

On June 12, 2019, Darvesh Singh was visiting the Agra civil court where she was supposed to be congratulated on being elected president. Her lifelong helper Manish Babu Sharma was also present there. Manish and Darvesh have not spoken to each other for the last 6 months due to the growing differences between them. Senior lawyer Arvind Mishra was happy to see Manish; since he thought he was there to congratulate her and bury her differences.

After meeting the junior lawyers and other members of the Agra civil court, Darvesh proceeded to the chambers of senior counsel Arvind Mishra, where his congratulatory ceremony was to take place. Darvesh and Manish were present in their chamber along with 6-7 defenders. Darvesh and Manish started arguing when suddenly Manish pulled the gun from him and shot Darvesh 3 times. Darvesh fired two bullets into the chest and one into the head. Everyone was in shock and before realizing what had happened, Manish shot himself. They were taken to Pushpanjali Hospital, where it was announced that Darvesh had died. Manish was in critical condition and the police waited for him to get better; How did they want to question him? The mortal remains were sent back to Etah, to his house to be cremated.
