But the woman decided she didn’t want to deal with the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers and armed guys in uniform.
A police officer yelled at Pérez, “Hey lady, come here,” as he ran to his apartment. Body camera captured an officer chasing the woman and attempting to break a window of her locked residence.
The policeman told him: “They are going to shoot you”. However, she yelled, “Shoot me,” as the police did not have a warrant.
William McManus, the San Antonio police chief, claimed that the team should have stopped and requested mental health assistance at that time.

According to McManus, “the appropriate response would have been for them to just leave, and we would address it at another time in a way that would not have put Ms. Perez in the situation she found herself in,” according to TPR.
However, no application was made for the Mental Health Unit (MHU), a 20-member, 16-officer unit that handles only mental health-related calls.
The community now questions why she was killed instead of using the resources for the mentally ill that were meant to help her.
Three police officers accused of the murder of Melissa Pérez
The family of Melissa Perez, tragically shot by San Antonio police in her home in June, has sued the city and the three officers involved, who have now been charged with murder.
According to the lawsuit, the “formal and informal policies of the San Antonio Police Department were the driving force behind” the death of the 46-year-old woman.
It further alleges that Perez’s death was caused by the police department’s practices on mental health calls and the mental health unit.

According to the lawsuit, the department’s “repeated failure to discipline its officers created a culture of tolerance for inappropriate and unconstitutional use of excessive force.” The family requests payment “in an amount commensurate with the damage caused.”
Also, the family addresses the improvements that need to be made, and then does the hard work to ensure that Melissa is the last person in San Antonio to be wrongfully killed by the police.
The plaintiffs in the lawsuit claim that City of San Antonio legislators are to blame for the shooting due to their policies, practices, lack of enforcement and lack of training.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff insists that the City is also responsible for the death of Ms. Perez.
“City lawmakers acted with deliberate indifference to known or obvious constitutional violations that would result from such policies,” the document states.
