Born on August 3, 1955, Ajay is a 62-year-old business tycoon from Bagar city in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. His upbringing is from Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Ajay’s family name was ‘Makhariya’ but later, his father Gopikrishna Piramal used his grandfather’s name ‘Piramal’ as his family name, and then it continues for the following generations.

Initially, his grandfather, Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj Makharia, ran a cotton business, who later in 1920, after getting India’s oldest and first recorded cotton mill, ‘Morarjee Mills’, established the Piramal business empire.

During the 1920s, Seth Piramal Chaturbhuj gained much fame through his philanthropic works for the development of Bagar.

Ajay has completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) from Jai Hind College, Mumbai, and an MBA from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai. Later, he traveled to the United States of America to attend the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at the Harvard Business School, in Boston, United States.

Career

At the age of 22, he assumed responsibility for his father’s textile and cutting tool businesses. He used to run this business with the cooperation of his brothers Dilip and Ashok. But, two years after his father’s death in 1979, his brother Dilip started ‘VIP Industries’ and ‘Blowplast’, separate businesses in 1982-83.

In 1984, when his second eldest brother, Ashok, died of cancer, he was appointed Chairman of ‘Piramal Enterprises’ and Chairman and Managing Director of ‘Morarjee Mills’. Then, in 1982, he invested in the ‘Gujarat Glass’ industry, which he found profitable.

In 1988, he bought a pharmaceutical company, ‘Nicholas Laboratories’, for Rs 16 crore, turning it into ‘Nicholas Piramal’. Although he did not have much knowledge about the healthcare industries at that time, however, with the cooperation of his workers and strategies such as overtime work, competitive pricing, and locally manufactured drugs, his industry, in a short period of time, gave strong competition to pharmaceutical companies: GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer.

In 1993, he bought a healthcare company ‘Roche Products’ for ₹20 crore and separated the pharmaceutical and real estate businesses. In the same year, he also established ‘Crossroads’, one of the first shopping malls in India.

In 1996, after receiving a commission from the pharmaceutical company ‘Boehringer Mannheim’, he took it over. In 1976, after his joint venture with ‘Reckitt & Colman’, a consumer goods company, he built a strong sales team.

In 2000, he acquired the ‘Rhône-Poulenc’ company for ₹236 crore, which was one of his biggest acquisitions at the time.

In 2005, he invested Rs 180 crore in a commercial property investment company ‘The Glass Group’ which had a purchase price of Rs 84 crore.

In 2009, he expanded his business by buying an interventional pain management category pharmaceutical company, called ‘Minrad’, for ₹188 crore. In the same year, he established a non-profit organization called ‘Piramal Foundation’ to provide education, healthcare, livelihood and youth empowerment to the minority group of Indians. This foundation also won Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Corporate Trailblazer’ award, instituted by India Today Group.
