In a speech in Islamabad on Saturday evening to protest the detention and alleged torture of his close aide Shahbaz Gill, Khan was accused of “threatening” state authorities and planning to file a legal challenge after Gill was detained on August 9.
Khan singled out senior Islamabad Police officers and a female judge who had sanctioned Gill’s detention for two days earlier in the week. Gill is facing sedition charges after allegedly instigating a revolt against the country’s formidable military.
He accused Police of abusing Gill in detention and said the allegations were part of a “conspiracy” to put his Party against the military. The Police have refuted the charges of torture.
“When I asked Islamabad Police ‘tell me what did you do [to Gill],’ I was informed that ‘we did nothing. “We received a boot from behind [to obey instructions],” Khan stated in his speech.
Islamabad Police criticized Khan’s statements and warned anybody “threatening the Police or making false claims would be dealt with according to the law.”
In a statement issued on Sunday, Pakistan’s media regulatory body accused Khan of making “baseless claims” and “promoting hate speech” against “state institutions and personnel” and prohibited live broadcasting of his rallies on national television.
