Vishal Dadlani is an Indian singer, music director and lyricist. He works with his ‘creative partner’ Shekhar Ravjian and they are popularly known as Vishal-Shekhar. Apart from working in the mainstream Bollywood music industry, he is also a member of a rock/electronica band called Pentagram. He has also sung songs in Tamil, Telegu and Marathi languages.

Vishal Dadlani was born on Thursday, 28 June 1973 (age 50; as of 2023) in Bandra, West Bombay, Maharashtra. He grew up in Bandra, Mumbai where he studied.

After completing his schooling from Hill Grange High School in South Bombay, he joined Jai Hind College, Mumbai University for two years and then graduated from HR College of Commerce and Economics, HSNC University. He received his bachelor’s degree in commerce in 1994. Vishal developed a sense of music by listening to the music his parents listened to. From Led Zeppelin to Jagjit Singh, he tried and experimented with different languages and genres of music. Pentagram is an Indian rock band formed in 1994 and Vishal is the lead singer of the band. It consists of three other members, Shiraz Bhattacharya on drums, Randolph Correia on guitar and Papal Mane on bass. They are considered forerunners in the field of independent music bands. Their debut album, We Are Not Listening, was released in 1996 and featured noted poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar and musician Shankar Mahadevan. After their debut, the group became very popular and released more albums such as “Up”, “It’s OK, It’s All Good” and “Bloodywood”. He rose to fame as a singer, composer and lyricist after scoring several Bollywood projects such as Jhankaar Beats (2003), Bluffmaster (2005) and Salaam Namaste (2005).

A big break in Bollywood
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was the first to give Vishal singing in Bollywood films. The first song in which he lent his voice was “Kiss of Love” from the Bollywood film “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” in 2007; However, it was the song ‘Dhoom Again’ from the movie ‘Dhoom 2’ which was released earlier than ‘Kiss of Love’. In 2019, he raised his voice against the song remix culture in Bollywood. Talking about the song ‘Saaki’ from the Bollywood film Musafir (2004), Dadlan said that he would sue anyone who would not attempt to remix Vishal-Shekhar’s songs again. The song “Saaki” was recreated by Tanishk Bagchi for the Bollywood film Batla House (2019). Dadlan spoke about this in an interview and said:
It’s not about one song, one person, one company, or one remix. It refers to a flawed system that allows the use of what is supposed to be a composer’s legacy without any regard for the original composers themselves.”

In 2016, Vishal posted a disrespectful tweet expressing his anger and mocking Jain Beer’s Muni Tarun Sagar. Moon’s followers strongly criticized him and demanded an apology. He tweeted,

Chennai Express: Dadlani and Honey Singh Row
According to reports, when Honey Singh was offered a song in Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Chennai Express’, Dadlani was not happy with the decision of Shah Rukh Khan and the ‘Chennai Express’ team as he did not want to associate a singer like Honey Singh with the project. Earlier, Dadlan criticized Honey Singh for his feminine approach to his songs. Dadlan tweeted,
“It’s ridiculous and pathetic how desperate this sophisticated rapper is trying to get the fame of @iamsrk and #ChennaiExpress. Poor boy.”
