Encounter Specialist

VC Sajjanar

With his proactive approach to curbing crime, Mr. VC Sajjanar has earned the label of “Encounter Specialist” in the popular media. Before the meeting of the four defendants who were involved in the 2019 Hyderabad gang rape and murder, he had led a similar meeting of the defendants in a similarly sensational acid attack case in December 2008 in the Warangal district of Telangana. He was the Warangal District Police Superintendent in the YS Rajaskehar Reddy regime when three young men attacked two girls, Swapnika and Pranitha, with acid as they rode a scooter to the university. The two girls were studying engineering at the Kakatiya Institute of Technology in Warangal. Swapnika had reportedly turned down the proposal of Srinivas, the main defendant in that sensational acid attack. According to police, Srinivas assaulted the girls and attacked them with acid along with his friends P Harikrishna and B Sanjay. While Swapnika died instantly, Pranitha recovered after long treatment. Shortly after the incident, widespread public outrage erupted in the state and across the country. After catching the defendants, the police under the able leadership of Mr. VC Sajjanar brought them before the media, where they confessed to their crime. Subsequently, they were transferred to the place to recreate the crime scene; however, they tried to run away and rebelled against the police, and in defense, the police had to confront them.
