Physical Transformation
In 2018, Shriyam lost 25 kgs for a film that ended up being shelved.
She then had to gain weight for her role in the television show, City of Dreams – Season 2 (2021). Shriyam had to gain 14 kgs for her role in the Sumo Didi (2023) film. She consumed 2500 calories daily to reach 97 kgs to portray Hetal Dave, India’s first professional female sumo wrestler. According to her trainer, Shriyam was 83 kgs when cast as Hetal. She went through months of physical training to remain muscular while gaining weight. She also had to learn to wrestle when she was 97 kgs, which was challenging. Speaking of the extreme weight losses and gains, Shriyam stated that she felt out of control and that the process affected her physical and mental health.

Shriyam Bhagnani gained experience in production and editing before starting her acting career. She also assisted directors.
Film
Shriyam’s first appearance on the screen was in the film Bhaagi 2 (2018), where she played the character, Simi alongside actors Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani.
She also acted in the film Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018). In 2019, she co-wrote and produced the short film Sunny Se Rubaroo. Her first lead role was in the film Sumo Didi (2023), where she portrayed the role of Hetal Dave, India’s first professional female sumo wrestler.
She had to undergo a weight transformation and rigorous training to imitate the appearance and skill of Hetal. She underwent training with celebrity trainer Sahil Rasheed and sumo training with Hetal Dave. Speaking about it in an interview, she said,
She taught me the typical sumo squat, which we performed every day. She also taught me how wrestlers conduct themselves, how to look at the opponent when you enter the ring, and prepare yourself to fight when the person you face is bigger than you. It was a challenging experience, but every bit worthwhile.”
Television
The first television series Shriyam appeared in was City of Dreams – Season 2 (2021), which aired on the OTT platform Disney + Hotstar. She played the character Tanya Mehta opposite actor Ankur Rathee. She was nominated for a Filmfare “Best Supporting Actor” award for her role as Tanya but did not make it to the final round.
Facts/Trivia
- In an interview, Shriyam stated that although her family is well-known in the Bollywood film industry, she doesn’t want to use her connections. She said,
I do belong to a film family, but then I don’t want people to focus on that when talking about me. I want people to know and appreciate me because of my work, not as someone’s daughter or niece.”
- When Shriyam was young, she wanted to become a tennis player. She wanted to become an actor after participating in a play during a fest at her college.
- Shriyam is a sportsperson. She used to play and train in tennis.
- In an interview, Shriyam stated that she faced bad days while shooting. Speaking of a particular experience, she said,
I went to the director and asked him about the food situation but was instead abused on the mic in front of almost 300 people. I wanted to give up but I tried empathising. A few months later, my experience on a set was the most pleasant because there were women onboard… When there are women around you, the warmth comes naturally.”
