Where Is Gwinnett County Police Officer Killer Yahya Abdulkadir? Arrest And Charge

Gwinnett County Police have arrested the suspect believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of correctional officer Scott Riner earlier this week.

Yahya Abdulkadir, 22, was taken into custody on Friday, December 16, and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.

Police say SWAT officers arrested the 22-year-old without incident around 1:30 pm at the Black Dot community center off Main Street in Lithonia.

Investigators released an image of the suspect from surveillance footage that featured the man’s profile, hoping someone would recognize him and call the Police.

They say Abdulkadir was the person seen in the surveillance video. “We believe he is the same person we have seen,” Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Jennifer Richter said.

They further note that the team had tracked him for several hours before the arrest.

Officer Riner was shot at around 6:30 am on December 13 outside the Gwinnett County Correctional Center on Hi Hope Road.

Investigators believe Abdulkadir and Riner got into an altercation before Abdulkadir shot Riner and fled the scene.

Police state that Riner’s co-workers found him shot in the parking lot. They are uncertain about the motive behind the deadly shooting.

Sgt Richter stated, “It does not appear that the officer and Mr. Abdulkadir knew each other, but as we further investigate, that could change.”

Investigators believe Abdulkadir acted alone in the murder. They hope the arrest of the culprit comforts Riner’s family.

“Detectives have been working on this non-stop,” said Sgt. Richter. Riner had worked in the correctional facility for over a decade.
