Biography/Wiki

Ravi Shankar Prasad was born on August 30, 1954 (65 years old; as on 2018) in Patna, Bihar, India. He has obtained a BA (Honours) and an MA in Political Science from Patna University. Furthermore, he completed his LLB from the University of Patna. During his university days, he was appointed Assistant Secretary General of the Student Union and a member of the Senate, Faculties of Arts and Law. He was a member of the Patna University Finance Committee. As a student, he too was associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and held various positions in the said organization.

In 1975, during the emergency, Ravi Shankar was arrested for protesting against the Government of Indira Gandhi. He was also an activist for Human Rights and Civil Liberty. In 1980, he started his career as a lawyer in the Patna High Court. In 1995, he was nominated as a member of the National Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party for 20 years. In 1999, he was appointed Senior Counsel at the Patna High Court.

In 2000, Ravi Shankar was appointed Senior Counsel of the Supreme Court. He argued the PIL against the then CM of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, in the fodder scam. He represented the deity in the Ayodhya Ram temple trial at the Lucknow bank of the Allahabad High Court and also argued in many more high-profile cases.

Ravi Shankar was born into a Hindu Kayastha family of the late Thakur Prasad and Bimla Prasad. His father, Thakur Prasad, was a lawyer at the Patna High Court and a former chairman of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh (a political arm of the RSS) in Bihar, which later became the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).

Career

In 2000, Ravi Shankar was elected as the Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament for the state of Bihar. In 2001, during the Prime Ministerial term of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he became Minister of State (Coal and Mines) and a member of the BJP’s National Legal Convening Cell. In 2002, he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice. The same year, he amended the ‘People’s Representation Law’ bill to end the criminalization of politics. He also took the initiative to provide people with speedy justice. Furthermore, in 2003, he became Minister of State at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He initiated the venture capital investment and good marketing of Indian films, reforms in radio and television.

In 2006, Ravi Shankar was appointed as the National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was re-elected as the Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament for the second term. He was a Financial Member of the Permanent Parliamentary Committee and the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2010, he was elected All India Secretary General and BJP Chief National Spokesperson. In 2012, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a third term and was also nominated as deputy leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha. Consequently, in 2016, he was appointed Union Minister in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and also in the Ministry of Law and Justice by the Government of India.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, he won by a margin of 2,78,198 votes against Shatrughan Sinha of the Congress from Bihar’s Patna Sahib constituency.

  • In 2005, during an election rally, Ravi Shankar Prasad was shot in the left arm by a lone gunman who invaded the dais where BJP leaders were sitting. The defendant was identified as Munna Rai, who was later lynched by BJP supporters after his attempt to assassinate Ravi. However, Ravi Shankar was declared out of danger by the doctors.
