Jake enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard and completed tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq before moving to Fargo and joining the local police force. He was shot as he was finishing his field training.

Jake is survived by his devoted parents Jeff and Amy (Shuler) Wallin; the dear brother of him Brady; his fiancée Winter Malone; his grandparents, John and Carolee Wallin of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota; and grandparents Jerry and Deborah Shuler of Rock Hill, South Carolina; as well as his aunts, uncles and cousins. All of these people reside in San Miguel.
