The daughter of teachers Howard and Barbara Cleave, Cleave was born in Southampton, New York.

She was raised in Great Neck, New York, and had two sisters: Barbara “Bobbie” Cleave Bosworth, who was younger, and Trudy Carter, who was older.

Cleave received her diploma from Great Neck, New York’s Great Neck North High School in 1965.

She graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences in 1969 and Utah State University with a master’s degree in microbial ecology in 1975.

From September 1971 to June 1980, Cleave worked as a research engineer, research phycologist, and graduate research student at Utah State University’s Ecology Center and Utah Water Research Laboratory.

Her technical assignments have included crew equipment design, five Space Shuttle flights as CAPCOM, flight software verification in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL), and the Malfunctions Procedures Book.

Cleave, a veteran of two space missions, spent a total of 10 days, 22 hours, 02 minutes, and 24 seconds in space.
