In 1968, she advanced to the position of Subordinate Judge; in 1972, she became Chief Judicial Magistrate; and in 1974, she was appointed District & Sessions Judge.

At the age of ninety-six, Justice Fathima Beevi, the first female judge of the Indian Supreme Court, passed away on Thursday. 

Justice was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu after leaving the Supreme Court. Kerala’s Health Minister Veena George said it was a terrible death and offered her condolences on Beevi’s demise.

The minister said that Justice Beevi made history as the first female governor of Tamil Nadu and judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Fathima Beevi, a former governor of Tamil Nadu and the first female judge of the Supreme Court passed away on Thursday at a private hospital in this city, according to official sources. 

She was ninety-six years old at the time of her death. State health minister Veena George expressed her condolences on Justice Beevi’s passing, stating that it was a very terrible death but didn’t mention her exact cause of death. 

M. Fathima Beevi, the daughter of Khadeeja Beevi and Annaveettil Meer Sahib, was born into a family of rowthers on April 30, 1927, in Pathanamthitta, in the Kingdom of Travancore, which is now part of Kerala, India.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University College, Thiruvananthapuram, after attending Town School and Catholicate High School in Pathanamthitta. 

She graduated with a B.L. from Thiruvananthapuram’s Government Law College. On January 25, 1997, she was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then-President of India, appointed her as the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Justice Sukhdev Singh Kang, the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, as the Governor of Kerala, stating that “their experience of and insights into the working of the Constitution and the laws comprise valuable assets.”

In her capacity as state governor, she denied the four convicted inmates’ requests for mercy in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. 

The pleas for mercy that the convicts had sent to the Governor begged her to use her authority under Article 161 of the Constitution.
