Fact Check: Is Sufjan Stevens Gay? Gender And Sexuality
Is Sufjan Stevens Gay? Maybe. He is most likely bisexual. At the very least, that is what his songs appear to suggest rather than being exclusively homosexual or straight.
His sexuality is wholly unique to him. Something he possesses. His music ought to speak for itself. Artists who identify as heterosexual don’t declare it publicly. Just seems pointless, doesn’t it? Be cheerful and enjoy the man’s music.
You shouldn’t view sexuality as a binary, gay-or-straight condition in order to fully explore this question. Depends on the person, really.

Some of Sufjan’s songs are about Jesus and his spirituality; one such song is “To Be Alone With You,” from the album “Seven Swans,” which is based on Christianity.
Being a Christian, however, is not a requirement for non-heterosexuality.
It also doesn’t matter how someone else interprets a particular lyric; as Sufjan states in “Blue Bucket of Gold,” “Once the myth has been told / the lens deforms it as lightning”; his “true” meaning gets diluted as we all give it our own interpretations.
The songs are whatever you choose to make of them; art is personal. Sufjan also “plays the pronoun game,” which is a word for a love ballad that omits pronouns and leaves the subject of the song up for debate.
