Clarence Gilyard’s death shocked everyone after he was suffering from a prolonged illness.
An accomplished Actor who has appeared in films, television shows, and plays, Gilyard made a lasting impression in the 1980s after a string of guest-star TV roles.
He made his acting debut as Sundown in “Top Gun” and exuded a gleeful menace as the terrorist computer genius Theo in “Die Hard.” He landed a regular role in “Matlock” in 1989, playing Conrad McMasters, a private investigator for Andy Griffith’s chief criminal defense lawyer.
Before leaving “Matlock” in 1993 to play Jimmy Trivette, the tough sergeant’s right-hand man on CBS’ Western crime series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” Gilyard appeared in 85 episodes of “Matlock.” The show’s eighth season had 196 episodes, and he was in all of them. Dean Fischer acknowledged that he deeply inspired everyone he knew, including his students. He was very well known in the University for his commitment to teaching and his professional accomplishments, in addition to his many extraordinary talents.
Nate Bynum, a professor of theatre at UNLV, also expressed his sorrow by stating how much he loved his family at UNLV and his students in particular. “Gone too soon,” he continued.

Clarence Gilyard Career In Acting
Since his Father served in the U.S. Air Force, Clarence grew up on a military base. After graduating high school, he also wanted to follow in his Father’s footsteps.
Clarence enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a result but left after just a year to enroll in Sterling College. He was a good student who managed to play football as a wide receiver while also attending class.

Sadly, he stopped studying and started a job. Following his relocation to California, the Actor worked there for a while before enrolling at California State University, Long Beach, where he majored in acting.
After enrolling in the acting class for a year, Clarence joined a repertory group that staged kid-friendly plays on the weekends. He continued acting classes while performing in elementary schools because the Company would put on as many as three shows in a single day.
His commitment to the performing arts paid off because he was offered a part in “Bleacher Bums” during a nighttime presentation, making him the first black Actor to be cast in the play’s cheerleader role.

Later, he was forced to drop out once more, and Clarence had to find work to support himself while still hoping for his big break in television.
