Camille Abily is a French football manager and former player, who became famous as a player for the France women’s national team as well as for Olympique Lyonnais in the Division 1 Féminine. Currently, she holds the position of assistant manager of Lyon.

Camille Abily, primarily a midfielder during her playing days, began her football journey in 1992 with Jeanne d’Arc Bruz. By 1994, she moved to FC Bruz and later played for other local teams, including Stade Briochin and La Roche-sur-Yon. Her talents led her to the Clairefontaine Academy in 2002. Post-Clairefontaine, Abily joined Montpellier, securing two league championships and the Challenge de France. She then moved to Lyon, winning three consecutive league titles from 2006 to 2009. Abily entered the U.S. Women’s Professional Soccer in 2008, was drafted by Los Angeles Sol, and debuted in 2009 against Washington Freedom. Following a league win with Sol, she briefly joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan. In 2010, Abily played for FC Gold Pride, winning another title, and then returned to Lyon, contributing to their first UEFA Women’s Champions League title in the 2010–11 season.

In international play, Abily represented France 183 times. Starting with the under-18 team at the 2001 UEFA Women’s Under-18 Championship, she debuted with the senior team in 2001 against the Netherlands and scored her first national team goal in 2007 against China. She participated in major tournaments like UEFA Women’s Euro 2005, 2009, 2013, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2011 and 2015, achieving a fourth-place finish in 2011.

International Career

Camille Abily first played for the French national team, Les Bleues, on September 26, 2001, in a game against the Netherlands. She represented France in both the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, where the team finished fourth in the 2012 competition. In 2017, Abily decided to retire from international football, to spend more time with her daughter.

As a Manager


Following a second tenure at Lyon that lasted 8 seasons, Abily retired from playing in 2018.


Escaping Punishment in FIFA Women’s World Cup

In the first game of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was a 1–0 victory against England in Moncton, Abily was involved in a controversial moment. She elbowed English player Laura Bassett in the face, resulting in Bassett getting a black eye, but Abily did not receive any punishment for this action.

  • Camille Abily was honored twice as the Female Player of the Year by the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP). Notably, after winning this award again in 2007, she made history as the first player to receive it in consecutive seasons.
  • Throughout her career, Abily has secured four league championships with her teams. She achieved two victories with Montpellier and then another two consecutive wins with Lyon. During both of these successful periods with Lyon, she was named Female Player of the Year, in 2006 and 2007. Additionally, in 2010, she won the WPS Championship with FC Gold Pride.
