However, relief washed over the global community as Sen’s family and colleagues swiftly debunked the rumors.
They confirmed that the celebrated thinker was alive and in good health, putting an end to the unfounded speculations that had momentarily gripped the online sphere.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potency of misinformation in the age of social media, urging users to exercise caution and verify news from credible sources before spreading unverified information.
Amartya Sen Death Hoax Debunked: The Indian Economist Is Alive
The source of the fake news was a website that claimed to be a news portal but was actually a prank site that allowed users to create their own fake news stories.
The site had a disclaimer at the bottom that stated: “This website is an entertainment website; users create jokes.
These are humourous, fantasy, and fictional jokes that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information.” However, many people did not notice the disclaimer and took the news at face value.

The hoax was exposed by Sen’s family members, who posted messages on their social media accounts to reassure the public that he was fine.
His daughter Nandana Sen, an actress and writer, tweeted: “My father is very much alive and kicking! Please ignore this malicious nonsense.”
His son Antara Sen, a journalist and author, also tweeted: “Please disregard the rumors about my father’s death. He is in good health and spirits. Thank you for your concern and love.”
Sen’s colleagues at Harvard University, where he is a professor of economics and philosophy, also issued a statement to clarify that he was not dead.

The statement read: “We are happy to report that Professor Amartya Sen is alive and well.
He is currently working on his latest book and teaching his courses at Harvard. We regret the confusion and distress caused by the false news of his demise.”
Amartya Sen Health In 2023
Amartya Sen has been in good health as of 2023 for his age despite suffering from prostate cancer in 2004. He underwent surgery and radiation therapy and recovered successfully.
He has continued to be active in his academic and public life, publishing books, articles, lectures, and interviews.
Armatya has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, such as the Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian award), the National Humanities Medal (USA), the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (Germany), and the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science (Sweden).

Sen is married to Harvard University’s historian and economist Emma Rothschild. He has four children from his previous marriages to Nabaneeta Dev Sen (a poet and novelist), Eva Colorni (an economist), and Emma Rothschild.
