Today is the first day of the couple’s trial for allegedly killing their four-week-old child. 

Four years after the inquiry began, in 2021, Michael Davis and Kayleigh Driver, both of Carlisle Street, Leicester, were charged with murder.

They are allegedly accused of causing or permitting a child’s death, two counts of causing grievous bodily harm, and causing or permitting a child to suffer serious physical harm.

The accusations include the couple’s four-week-old son, Ollie Davis, who was discovered unconscious in his crib on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

The two have asserted their innocence and have been free on conditional bail while trialing the case.

Driver and Davis last appeared in court in May 2022 before Leicester Crown Court Judge Timothy Spencer QC.

During the brief session, they merely spoke to confirm their names as the judge heard from the couple’s attorneys about the proceedings leading up to the trial, which was initially scheduled for October 4 last year.

Today in Leicester Crown Court, more than five years after Ollie’s passing, the entire trial is scheduled to start. It is anticipated to run up to six weeks and feature 34 witnesses.

In addition to allegations of causing or permitting a child’s death, two counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm, and causing or permitting a child to experience serious physical harm, the two were charged with murder in 2021.

The two have asserted their innocence and have been free on conditional bail while trialing the case.

Driver and Davis, who both currently reside in Westcotes, Leicester’s Carlisle Street, are scheduled to appear at Leicester Crown Court for the trial’s opening day, which is scheduled to start at around 11 am today. 

34 witnesses are anticipated to testify during the trial before The Honourable Mrs. Justice Farbey, which could last up to six weeks.
