In a heartfelt Instagram post on Thursday, Shane MacGowan’s wife and lifelong partner Victoria Mary Clarke announced his passing at the age of 65.

The Irish singer-songwriter, who is most renowned for being the lead vocalist of The Pogues and the hit song “Fairytale of New York” for the holidays, was admitted to the hospital recently following an encephalitis diagnosis.

On Dec. 6, 2022, MacGowan was admitted to the hospital due to an infection. It was determined that he had viral encephalitis. 

After breaking his pelvis in a fall that occurred in the summer of 2015 while he was leaving a studio in Dublin, MacGowan was confined to a wheelchair.

MacGowan had a reputation for having terrible dental hygiene; he lost the last of his natural teeth in 2008. 

He underwent a nine-hour treatment in 2015 to have a new set of teeth fitted, including one gold tooth. 

Eight titanium implants held these in place in his jaws. Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn, an hour-long television program, focused on the procedure. 

MacGowan recorded most of his best works while he still had some teeth, the dental surgeon who performed the treatment remarked, “We’ve effectively re-tuned his instrument and that will be an ongoing process.” 

MacGowan Battled With Viral Encephalitis

In July 2023, there was a report stating that MacGowan was admitted to the critical care unit (ICU). In November, after receiving treatment for an infection, he was let go. 

On November 16, 2023, he made his final public speech, praising Travis Kelce’s rendition of “Fairytale of New York”.

At the age of 65, MacGowan passed away at home on November 30, 2023, with his wife by his side.

His wife Victoria Mary Clarke confirmed his passing on Thursday on social media, writing, “Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life.”

In a video that was shared on social media on New Year’s Eve of last year, he disclosed that he had been diagnosed with encephalitis.

The Irish singer was being treated at Dublin’s St Vincent’s Hospital since the illness was discovered in the previous year.

Fans were informed by Ms. Clarke just a week ago that the vocalist of Fairytale of New York had left the hospital.
