Sergei Grinkov, a two-time Olympic pairs champion, passed away from a heart attack on November 20, 1995, in Lake Placid, New York, while training with his wife and partner, Ekaterina Gordeeva, just five days before the start of the Stars on Ice tour.
According to Dr. Francis Varga, who conducted the preliminary autopsy revealed that a family history of coronary artery disease is a risk factor, and it appears Sergei’s Father passed away from heart disease at a young age.
Varga stated that this disease, which is likely related to a genetic predisposition, causes young people who are physically fit to die.
He claimed that only a stress test would have detected Grinkov’s heart condition, not a routine checkup.

Russian pairs skater Sergei Grinkov, 28, who won two Olympic gold medals, passed away unexpectedly on Monday from a painless heart attack.
According to an autopsy, the two-time Olympic figure skating champion passed away from a major heart attack brought on by a blocked artery and high blood pressure.
According to Varga, he appears to have suffered another heart attack within the previous 24 hours before passing out on Monday.
When Grinkov collapsed, one of the few individuals present was former skater Laura Nardiello, who said everything appeared to be okay. Grinkov lifted her, set her down, and then simply took a step back, appearing unsteady.

The Grinkov’s left anterior artery, which supplies a significant portion of the heart muscle, was virtually closed, according to the autopsy.
Varga claimed that whether he continued on any schedule was a matter of time. The likelihood of him surviving was slim unless his condition was discovered and he underwent a bypass. Sudden death is frequently the first symptom of coronary artery disease in young people.

His heart was enlarged, as athletes’ hearts frequently are, but because of his history of hypertension, it was disproportionately enlarged, more than anyone would expect for an athlete.
According to Varga, athletes tend to hide things because they are so tough, and the main issue is that men don’t like to complain about their pain. No signs of steroid use or any other type of drug or alcohol abuse, he claimed.
According to Varga, except for this one issue, he was obviously in good health. His heart muscle was oxygen-depleted throughout the front half and a portion of the left side.
Grinkov And Gordeeva Initial Career
In pairs skating, Grinkov and Gordeeva captured four world titles and two Olympic gold medals. They were a traditional, ballet-trained couple with a romantic skating style that reflected their real-life romance.

They began Monday with a routine practice at the Olympics ice center before performing in the “Stars on Ice” show.
Before going pro in late 1990, Gordeeva and Grinkov, who competed for the Soviet Union, won four world championships (1986, 1987, 1989, 1990) and the Olympic gold medal in 1988. For the 1993–1994 season, the couple was once again eligible to compete in the Olympics, and they went on to win another gold medal while representing Russia.
