Following a jet-ski accident in 1997, Perry developed a Vicodin addiction and finished a 28-day treatment program. Over the next three years, his weight fluctuated; pancreatitis caused him to plummet below 145 pounds.
Due to his addiction to alcohol, methadone, amphetamines, and Vicodin, he checked himself into rehab in February 2001.
Perry was admitted to Daniel Freeman Hospital in Marina del Rey due to excruciating stomach pain while he was filming Serving Sara in Texas.

He disclosed that he could not recall the three years he spent acting on Friends between seasons three and six because of his addiction problems.
