According to event organizers, a 51-year-old man passed away while competing in the Ironman Wisconsin triathlon over the weekend.
Race organizers released a statement on Facebook confirming the death of a competitor during the IRONMAN Wisconsin triathlon on Sunday.
According to a GoFundMe account that started to raise money for his wife and children, the victim was identified as Dax Bakken, a military veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm and was the father of three children.

IRONMAN Wisconsin officials said that Bakken passed out during the bike leg of the event in the hamlet of Cross Plains.
He received medical assistance from a race staff member and an off-duty police officer before being taken to a nearby hospital by EMS, where he was later declared dead by a race spokesman.

Bakken “had trained and dreamed of” taking part in the whole 140.6-mile triathlon, which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle ride, and a 26.2-mile run, according to family members in the GoFundMe.
The father was the “primary support” for his family, which also comprised his wife, his daughter, who was eight years old, and his two kids. He had just finished his master’s degree.
According to his LinkedIn page, Bakken held positions as a senior developer and development manager at Whitsell Innovations in Madison.
