The Malay Mail reports that Sam drove uphill toward the teens and struck them just behind the hill as the cyclists traveled against the traffic flow on a mountainous, poorly illuminated, three-lane road.

She was neither intoxicated nor on the phone at the time, and it was determined that she was driving within the posted speed limit. For the incident, she has now twice been found not guilty.

After the Johor Bahru High Court overturned an original acquittal, Sam Ke Ting, 28, was sentenced to six years in prison and an RM6,000 (S$1,817) fine in April 2022 for careless or dangerous driving that resulted in the deaths of eight youths.
The panel’s chair, Justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail, informed Sam that she was free after the sentence and fine were both vacated.
The panel’s hearing is the last opportunity for the case to be heard; subsequent appeals are not permitted.
According to the panel, Sam’s appeal was granted because the charge and conviction “did not follow the law.”

She added that it was unreasonable for the High Court to find Sam guilty at first after claiming that the tragedy was “impossible to avoid” in 2022.
